How to get better answers from ChatGPT

Practical techniques to keep ChatGPT focused, reduce repetition, and get more useful answers from long conversations.

ChatGPT is incredibly capable, but the quality of its answers drops fast as a conversation grows. Here's how to keep it sharp without starting over every time.

1. Separate threads by topic

If you're using one long chat for everything – strategy, drafting, research, coding – the model has to juggle all of it. Splitting work into focused threads reduces drift and improves answer quality almost immediately.

2. Restate the focus before key questions

Before asking a critical question, summarise what you actually want the AI to think about. One or two lines is enough. This re-anchors the model on what matters and pushes older, less relevant context into the background.

3. Treat context as something you curate

The best AI users don't just type – they decide what the model should pay attention to. That might mean dropping in only the relevant excerpt instead of the whole document, or pinning a key constraint at the top of the conversation.

4. Use a structured workspace, not a chat log

Linear chat is fine for quick questions, but a chat log is the wrong tool for long, important work. A workspace like BrainStorm lets you organise your conversation into a context map, focus on a topic, and continue from exactly the right place.

Better answers don't come from cleverer prompts. They come from cleaner context.
